The finished animation can possess a visual novelty which helps to make the subject more appealing. The final animation can further increase your children’s self esteem by being shown on the internet or at festivals or even by being used as a direct teaching aid in other classes or schools. Because the production process can embrace varied skills including writing, drawing, sculpting, music, audio-visual design and computer literacy, it can also provide students with an opportunity to explore their individual strengths and interests. The process fosters self esteem, creative imagination, developing a story line, the use of dialogue, and imaginative sound effects or musical instruments. Naturally the work, calling as it does for various specific skills, is ideal for melding a group of disparate individuals into a cooperative whole. Some children cannot easily use written or spoken words to communicate their thoughts and feelings. Animation can provide these children with an opportunity to be included and valued by the group and to share their perceptions.I will work with one group/class during the day offering opportunities to experience a range of 2D and 3D animation techniques. Depending on the size of the group and their age and ability these may include :•Using a combination of materials and techniques - creating 2D backgrounds and characters to tell a simple class story...a theme chosen by the class or class teacher.•Creating 3D plasticene heads on shoulders to animate and interact.•Jointed cardboard characters coloured with felt pens•Drawn animation techniques.I can provide a drop-in animation day where participants can create a character and animate it in a ready prepared background. These days are perfect if you would like to give a larger number of participants a taste of animation.Teamwork is a vital part of making any film and children can learn valuable lessons about how they can improve their creative outcomes if they successfully co-operate.Other materials and ways of working may well be used during the day. If your group has a particular need or wish - please let me know - I am very adaptable.A copy of the days finished work will be available for the group to keep. The work will be created using Stop Motion Pro."We had been looking at ways of providing more exciting final outcomes in Literacy sequences, and booked Steve to help us animate our shared writing (based on Jackie Morris's 'The Snow Leopard'). Steve came and helped us produce some fantastic backgrounds and characters, and then worked with pairs of children to animate each scene of the story. He then recorded the children reading the story, and edited this into the video, along with the backing music the class band had created. The children were fully involved at every step of the animation process and could see each scene develop on Steve's big screen.Seeing their story come to life in front of the childrens' eyes had such a powerful impact. They were (and still are) immensly proud of the finished film. I have found that individual pupils' writing has improved as a direct result - the children have now realised just how much their word choice can impact on the viewer/reader. Their parents have responded very positively as well - one has even added the video to her Facebook page!I would definitely book Steve again - many of our children think his visit was the highlight of their school year!" Brook Osbourne, Teacher, Hatherleigh C P School, Devon."Our animation looked amazing by the end. Thank you Steve! I'd definitely do it again". Vicki"All of the day was packed full of fun. We all really enjoyed making the animation and people even made their own one. They were very good, but our class one was the best of all". Alice"The animation day was one of the best in my life - I had never done anything like it before". Niamh"The entire animation was fantastic. It was great fun to make and it's all thanks to Steve Newton who helped us with our masterpiece!" Michael and James" The animation was awesome!! Steve helped us create our very own movie. I just wish we could do it all again!". Chelsea and Chloe
